About Oscar Macchioni

For more than twenty years I served as a Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy, Assistant Chair, and Keyboard Area Coordinator at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2023, I accepted a tenured position in Piano Pedagogy at the University of North Texas.
My research and creative activities reflect my passion for music and include: national and international solo and collaborative performances; CD recordings; presentations at national and international conferences and professional meetings; research on teaching and Latin American music repertoire published in music magazines and scholarly publications; and numerous outreach services to the community.
I have performed solo and collaborative concerts throughout the USA and abroad. In addition, my performances have been highly praised by the press and peers. For example, my solo recital in Puebla, Mexico, at the Second International Vernacular Conference, was named “The Outstanding Musical Presentation for both for its topicality and for its musical excellence” by the conference’s music committee. Furthermore, my lecture-recital at the World Piano Conference in Serbia (2010) received the Diploma of Excellence, the highest steamed accolade for this conference.
I am dedicated teacher and mentor, much in demand as an adjudicator at various state, national and international piano competitions and festivals including the Bangkok International Chopin Competition, the European Piano Teachers Association, Piano Examinations Committee of Taiwan, The Hong Kong NCCP Piano Competition, MTNA, TMTA, and the International Keyboard Odyssiad and Festival.
My students have won local and state competitions, being accepted at prestigious MM and DMA programs, and developed healthy professional careers in music. I was awarded the 2015 University of Texas Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award, and in 2018 I was inducted into the UTEP Academy of Distinguished Teachers. In 2022 I received the Bonnie Brooks Professorship in Music at UTEP.
I have an especial interest in connecting with the community. My endeavor about bringing classical music to the undeserved population has resulted in a Community Concert Series sponsored by a grant from the City of El Paso through the Texas Commission on the Arts. I believe that everybody, given the opportunity, is capable of enjoying and understanding classical music. My community concerts series have proven to be a success targeting low-income schools, shelters, libraries, senior centers, and prisons.
My interest in the use of technology in the classroom has also benefited the piano pedagogy filed. In the summer of 2007 I designed and installed a state-of-the-art digital keyboard lab with a $250,000 grant by the Brown Foundation of Houston Inc. This lab has garnered much attention because it is considered the most advanced piano lab in the country by many colleagues from major universities and people from the electronic keyboard and IT’s industry. The Roland Corp., was amazed by this cutting-edge lab and featured it in its webpage with an interview and a teaching video demonstration, available at: DKL - OscarMacchioni Students are eager to take class piano and links to a show case of student’s works are available on the above link.
