About Michael W. Howard

I retired from the University of Maine at the end of August, 2022, after 41 years of teaching social and political philosophy, history of philosophy, and logic, in the Philosophy Department. I was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Member in the area of teaching and advising in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Maine, in 2012.

My research is in social and political philosophy, with particular interests in socialism, workplace democracy, distributive justice, global justice, climate justice, and basic income. I have published four books and many articles.

From 1993 to 2022, I served as Treasurer for the International Institute for Self-management. I co-edited the journal, Basic Income Studies, from 2014-2022. I was the coordinator and president of the US Basic Income Guarantee Network from 2008-2022.

I am currently working on topics related to basic income and climate justice.
