OBGYN-MFM, Neonatologist; Associate Professor
Dr. Kevin Coughlin is a neonatologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and an associate professor in the departments of Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Dr. Coughlin completed his medical degree at Queen’s University and his paediatric residency at the University of Ottawa, before completing his neonatal fellowship at Western University. He has been a consultant at Western University since 2005, where he has cross-appointments in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the Faculty of Graduate Studies Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Program. Currently, he serves as the Co- Chair of the Perinatal & reproductive Ethics Team, Neonatal Co-Director of the Southwestern Ontario Perinatal Outreach Program and Co-Director of the Paediatric Simulation Program.
Dr. Coughlin’s research interests in the area of bioethics have resulted in a strong foundation in qualitative methodologies. He believes clinicians with a qualitative methodology background offer a unique opportunity to study complex psychosocial phenomenon in difficult clinical settings, such as medical decision-making in Paediatrics, resuscitation of extremely preterm infants and priority setting in health care.
Dr. Coughlin’s newest academic and administrative endeavours focus on the use of high fidelity simulation in neonatal perinatal medicine, exploring these tools and their use in patient safety and quality assurance during the transfer of the perinatal program to a new organization within the city. Longer term goals include the optimal use of simulation in teaching, maintaining neonatal resuscitation skills and improving interprofessional team dynamics.
