Dr. Ann Marie Murphy joined the School of Diplomacy and International Relations as Assistant Professor in 2004. Dr. Murphy comes to the School with expertise in international relations and Asian politics. Prior to joining the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, she taught at Columbia University and Barnard College. Concurrent with her appointment at the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Dr. Murphy is a Senior Research Scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University and an Associate Fellow of the Asia Society. At Columbia, Dr. Murphy chairs the University Seminar on Contemporary Southeast Asia. She has also been a visiting scholar at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Jakarta, Indonesia, and the Institute for Security and International Studies, Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr. Murphy's research interests include international relations in Asia, political development in Southeast Asia, U.S. foreign policy toward Southeast Asia, and the rise of transnational issues such as climate change and global health. With the support of a generous grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation, she is currently researching and writing a book on the impact of democratization on Indonesian foreign policy.

Dr. Murphy's policy-oriented research and analysis has been commissioned by the National Bureau of Asian Research, the Asia Foundation, Freedom House, the National Defense University and government agencies. She has participated in projects organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Stanley Foundation, the Center for Global Counter-Terrorism Cooperation, the United States-Indonesia Society, and the Indonesian Embassy. Dr. Murphy has also briefed congressional staffers on Indonesia, lectured at the Foreign Service Institute and monitored Indonesia's first direct presidential election as a member of the Carter Center delegation. Her opinion pieces have been published by CNN.com, World Politics Review, Asia Times, PacNet Newsletter, opinionasia, the Nelson Report and the East Asia Forum, Australian National University.

At the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Dr. Murphy directs the Foreign Policy Analysis specialization in the graduate program, and teaches comparative foreign policy classes at the undergraduate level. The aim of foreign policy analysis is to understand how states define national interests and pursue them in the international arena. Dr. Murphy strives to bring the insights gained from working with policy-makers into the classroom, so that students gain a greater appreciation of the challenges facing statesmen.
