About Paul D. Lockhart

I've been teaching history at Wright State since Fall Quarter 1989, starting here slightly less than two months after I had defended my doctoral dissertation at Purdue University. At Purdue I studied early modern European and German history with Charles W. Ingrao and European military history with the late Gunther E. Rothenberg, the preeminent Napoleonic and European military history scholar of his day. Since coming to Wright State, I've been teaching specialized courses -- a couple dozen of them, altogether -- on a variety of topics: monarchy in the early modern world, the sixteenth-century "wars of religion" and the Thirty Years' War, the "military revolution" in early modern Europe, the art of war in the Western world since 1300, the First World War, and on Denmark and Sweden during their "Age of Greatness." Now my teaching, like my research, focuses mostly on war, and especially on tactics and military technology. It was in view of this return to my earlier interests that I created our current "War and Society" concentration under the general aegis of our MA program in history.
