James Spiller, a north Texas expatriate, studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to teaching at Iowa State University, he also practices at Knowles Blunck Architecture in Des Moines. His research interests primarily address the role of architectural representation within beginning design education, hybrid media, and adaptive reuse projects.
