Senior Clinical Professor
Professor Kalir joined the CSU|LAW faculty in 2012. Before arriving in Cleveland, Professor Kalir practiced antitrust and other federal litigation law with several prominent New York firms, most notably Skadden Arps, where he served for nearly five years. Prior to joining Skadden, Professor Kalir completed his LL.M studies at Columbia Law School as a Kent Scholar (highest honors) and served as a senior editor of the Columbia Business Law Review. He was then selected to teach the incoming LL.M class for two years as an Associate-in-Law. Several years later, Kalir returned to Columbia as an Adjunct Professor to co-teach a seminar on biblical jurisprudence with Professor George Fletcher.
Professor Kalir was born and raised in Tel Aviv and served in the Israeli Defense Forces for three years before attending the Hebrew University Law School. There he received his LL.B (cum laude) and LL.M (summa cum laude) degrees, taught Contracts and Jurisprudence as an instructor, and served on the editorial board of the law review. Following his studies, he clerked for the Hon. Justice Miriam Naor, formerly the Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court. Practicing law in Israel, Kalir had the opportunity of serving all three branches of government. He also argued successfully several cases before the Israeli Supreme Court. In 2011, he completed a translation of a book by Israel's most celebrated Chief Justice, Professor Aharon Barak, titled Proportionality: Constitutional Rights and Their Limitations (Cambridge 2012).
Professor Kalir teaches in the Civil Litigation Clinic, where he supervises students on a wide array of civil matters. He and his students have represented clients before Ohio State Courts of all levels (Municipal, Common Pleas, Court of Appeals, and Ohio Supreme Court), as well as federal courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Kalir also filed several Amicus (friend-of-court) Briefs with the United State Supreme Court, including a brief on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers in a child-removal case, and the Cuyahoga County Department of Law on behalf of same-sex parents and their children supporting Same-Sex Marriage.
He is currently a member of the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Certification of Attorneys as Specialists.
Professor Kalir’s research interests include same-sex marriage, Jewish Law, statutory interpretation, and appellate practice. He is currently a member of the state bars of New York and Ohio, as well as the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Northern District of Ohio, the Southern District of New York, and the Board of Immigration Appeals.
