Abstract
Adolescents in Africa are at risk of obesity due to the rising incomes and urbanizing populations, a decline in physical activity levels and a shift in diet to include foods very high in fats and sugars. High and increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents is a major public health concern globally. This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional status of adolescents using anthropometric measurements and to examine the knowledge, attitude and practice towards risks of overweight and obesity among adolescents from two private secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
A total of 300 (144 males and 156 females) adolescents were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Self- administered questionnaire was used to collect data on the socio-demographic status, level of knowledge of risk factors, attitude and factors influencing adolescent’s risks of overweight and obesity. A 10-item questionnaire with 1-point assigned to every correct response, and 0-point to incorrect responses was used to assess knowledge.  Respondents’ total knowledge was scored and grouped as “good” (˃7), “fair” (4–7), and “poor” (<4). A 10-item questionnaire comprising of 5 points- Likert scale was used to score the attitude of the respondents which was further grouped as either positive or negative attitude. WHO anthroplus software was used for anthropometric data and descriptive statistics at α0.05 were carried out using SPSS software version 20. Mean age was 14.5±2.87 and 52% were females. From the factors influencing adolescents’ risks questionnaire, 99.7% took fruits and vegetables, 38.7% had a poor attitude, 40% had a low knowledge and 1.33% were overweight and 0% were obese.
It was concluded that adolescents’ had poor knowledge, negative attitude but a good lifestyle which might have contributed to low percentage of overweight and no obesity amongst them.
