About Alex "Xander" Davies

On October 22, 2020, Alexander “Xander” Davies, a beloved teacher and researcher, passed away.

Alex "Xander" P. Davies, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education's Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Portland State University. Davies specializes in ESOL education as it relates to teacher preparation across the content areas (e.g., mathematics, science, social studies, and English/language arts and literacy) via ESOL infusion and interactive classroom simulations. Employing phenomenological, ethnographic, and photo-narrative methods, he is committed to the sociolinguistic and sociocultural identity constructions of first- and 1.5 generation immigrants as well as individuals with refugee and asylum statuses. While receiving his doctorate from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, he was a member of the Central Florida Refugee Coalition in which he served as a cultural broker and language/education specialist for newly arrived individuals of refugee and asylum statuses, provided professional development to local schools in ESOL and dual language education, and was the university's College of Education's ESOL Service Learning Coordinator.
