Louise G.T. Cooley Professor of English and Linguistics
Professor Taylor’s research areas include the philosophy of language, linguistic theory, history of linguistic ideas, primate communication, metalinguistics, and language in cognition. He has received multiple awards, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1994), the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award (1999), the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award (1988), the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence (2016), , and two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships (1989, 2001). He is a former director of the Linguistics Program and of the 1693 Scholars Program, and from 2001-2021 was the faculty director for W&M's program at Oxford University. Professor Taylor loves teaching at William & Mary, where the students delight in learning and the faculty are mutually supportive. Professor Taylor began teaching at William and Mary in 1982.
