About Dr. Sumeet Dua

Dr. Sumeet Dua

Bio

Dr. Sumeet Dua serves as the Executive Vice President for Research and holds the Max. P. & Robbie L. Watson Eminent Scholar Chair as a Professor of Computer Science and Cyber Engineering at Louisiana Tech University. In his current role, he leads the development and execution of strategies to enhance campus-wide research, grantsmanship, and collaborative activities. He plays a pivotal role in organizing the University's partnerships with federal, state, and corporate entities as well as other external stakeholders. Additionally, he devises strategies to leverage the University's research enterprise, academic programs, and other assets to support the community, creative activity, training, and workforce development mission.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Dua was the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and the Director for the Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Engineering, and Electrical Engineering Technology programs at Louisiana Tech. He is widely recognized as a subject matter expert, often invited to develop enterprise-wide data strategies and data science implementation plans for large governmental and corporate entities.

Dr. Dua specializes in Data Mining, Computational Decision Support, Structural Bioinformatics, Biological System Modeling, Multi-modality Fusion, and Biomedical Imaging. His laboratory focuses on designing high-performance algorithms to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in specialized datasets and develops semi-supervised algorithmic routines for pattern discovery in spatiotemporal spaces.

Recent bioinformatics research by Dr. Dua's team has concentrated on identifying protein structural features that remain invariant across evolutionary-related proteins by analyzing hydrophobicity and other physicochemical properties. This work aims to computationally characterize biological resistance to extreme conditions, potentially aiding in technologies for microorganism detection and sampling in environments like Mars.

Dr. Dua has co-authored/edited five books, including a textbook on Data Mining and Machine Learning in Cybersecurity, published by CRC Press in 2011. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 34 research abstracts, 9 book chapters, and holds 2 U.S. patents related to data mining and its applications. As a respected figure in computer science, Dr. Dua has served on more than 65 federal review panels for the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation, delivered 15 workshops, 17 keynotes, plenary talks, and over 67 other invited lectures worldwide on data mining and artificial intelligence. He has mentored over 25 Ph.D. and M.S. thesis students and 8 M.S. practicum students in AI-related fields, focusing on cybersecurity and biomedical informatics applications. His research has received funding from prestigious organizations including the NSF, NIH, AFOSR, AFRL, NASA, and LA-BOR.
