About Sharon McWhinney

Sharon McWhinney, PhD., RD is a Professor of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Chair of the Nutrition & Food Security Group in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Prairie View A&M University. Sharon is also a Registered and Licensed Dietitian. McWhinney has contributed to the body of knowledge through research,  peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations at professional local, state, and international conferences, reviewing/editing book and book chapters,  conducting and presenting community workshops and, teaching. Her membership in professional organizations over the years include the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the American Society of Nutrition (ASN), and the Institute of Food Technology (IFT), and the American Public Health Association (APHA). She is the faculty adviser for the Kappa Beta Epsilon chapter of the Kappa Omicron Nu (KONu) Honor society. McWhinney received the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR)-HBCU Faculty Scholar Award (2003) and is the recipient of numerous research and special projects funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institution of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Education, Texas Department of Health, The Department of Health & Human Services, and Prairie View A&M University. She has used her expertise in nutrition, food, and dietetics to train and mentor a vast population of students while promoting programs to enhance the health and well-being of diverse populations. She planned and implemented the post-baccalaureate dietetic internship program at Prairie View A&M University and wrote the institutional self-study for the initial accreditation of the Human Nutrition and the Dietetic Internship programs.  McWhinney has served as a reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a site reviewer at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, and Fort Valley State University in Georgia, and is a current member of the Board of External Examiners for the University of Technology, Jamaica. McWhinney earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Nutrition from Bluffton College, Ohio. She received a Master's in Human Sciences from Prairie View A&M University and a doctoral degree in Nutrition from Texas A&M University.
