About Sevgi Adak

Sevgi Adak is Associate Professor in Gender and Middle East Studies and Head of Research at AKU-ISMC. She completed her PhD in Middle Eastern Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands. She holds MA and MPhil degrees in political science, from York University (Toronto) and Central European University (Budapest), respectively, and a second MA in history from Sabanci University (Istanbul). Prior to joining AKU-ISMC in January 2016, she was a research fellow at the International Institute for Social History, Amsterdam, and taught at Istanbul Bahçeşehir University. She is on the editorial board of the Contemporary Turkey book series of IB Tauris and the British Institute at Ankara, and co-editor of the In Translation: Contemporary Thought in Muslim Contexts book series published by Edinburg University Press. Specializing in gender studies, social history of modern Turkey, politics of secularism and Turkish politics, Dr. Adak has published numerous articles and book chapters on the history of women’s activism, politics of gender, Turkish secularism, and the dynamics of state-society relations in modern Turkey. Dr. Adak’s book, Anti-Veiling Campaigns in Turkey: Gender, Power and Resistance in the Early Republic, was published by IB Tauris in 2022.
