About Ripendra Awal

Dr. Ripendra Awal has a bachelor's (Civil Engineering) and master's degree (Water Resources Engineering) from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, and a doctorate in Civil and Earth Resources Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. After earning his Ph.D. in 2008, he worked as a Research Associate and JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University. Before joining Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in 2013, he worked as an Assistant researcher at Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), University of Hawaiʻi – Mānoa, for two years. He also worked in Nepal at a private company and a government agency. Currently, he is working as Professor at PVAMU. He received Hydraulic Engineering Best Paper Award in 2008 from the Hydroscience and Hydraulic Engineering Committee, Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE). He is the recipient of the 2023 PVAMU-CAFNR Research Impact Award, 2021 PVAMU-Faculty Senate Excellence in Research Award, the 2020 Irrigation Association-Irrigation E3 (Leader), the 2019 PVAMU Outstanding Researcher Award, a winner in the STEM category of the 2019-Inaugural Research Week Display Award, and the 2018 PVAMU-CAHS Outstanding Researcher Award. His research generated more than $15.5 million in grants as a Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, Senior Personnel, or collaborator. He has published several research papers in reputable journals and presented at national and international conferences.
