About Richard Turits

Professor Turits’ research interests include Caribbean and Latin American history, and he is currently working on a book project titled Land and Empire: Histories from the Carribean, co-authored with Laurent Dubois. In 2003 Professor Turits’ first book, Foundations of Despotism: Peasants, the Trujillo Regime, and Modernity in Dominican History, was awarded the John Edwin Fagg Prize of the American Historical Association and the Bolton-Johnson Prize of the Conference on Latin American History in 2004. He has taught courses on the Modern Caribbean, the Cuban Revolution, and U.S. Interventions in Latin America and the World. From 2016-2017, Professor Turits held a National Humanities Center Fellowship, and he is an honorary member of the Dominican Academy of History.
