I am a biomechanist . My research activities focus primarily on the biomechanics and energetics of locomotion tasks and have often been interdisciplinary in nature. Past locomotion research has included projects on mechanical factors influencing the economy and efficiency of walking, running, and cycling; decrements in the mechanics and economy of walking in the elderly; and kinematic and kinetic determinants of walking and running patterns in below knee amputees. I have contributed to more than 70 research articles and book chapters and have made more than 130 research presentations at national and international meetings.

Having served as a faculty member at three universities since 1983, I have regularly contributed to both undergraduate and graduate instruction. Undergraduate courses have included Biomechanics, Electromyographic Kinesiology, Functional Human Anatomy, and Biomechanics of Exercise and Sport. At the graduate level I have taught Introduction to Biomechanics Research Methods and Research Methods in Physical Activity. At Iowa State University I contribute to instruction in KIN 355 Biomechanics, KIN 455 Research Topics in Biomechanics, KIN 501 Research Methods in Physical Activity, KIN 615 Doctoral Seminar, and GR ST 565 Responsible Conduct of Research in Science and Engineering. I also continue to mentor masters and doctoral students in our graduate program.

I am active in several professional organizations including the National Academy of Kinesiology (Fellow), American College of Sports Medicine (Fellow), American Society of Biomechanics (Fellow), and International Society of Biomechanics (member). I currently serve as President of the National Academy of Kinesiology and Vice President of the American Kinesiology Association. I have served as President of the American Society of Biomechanics (1994-95), Secretary-Treasurer of the National Academy of Kinesiology (2006-08), Associate Editor for Exercise and Sport Mechanics for the Journal of Applied Biomechanics (1997-2005), and Biomechanics Section Editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (1990-93). I have also been a member of the Research Review Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine (1991-94), the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Sport Biomechanics (1988-91), and the Scientific Advisory Committee for the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Council (1986-88).
