Teaching to Teach: A Practical Piano Pedagogy Curriculum to Implement in Universities and Conservatories

Abstract
It is widely agreed that the process of how we communicate a concept is perhaps more important than the concept itself. We can have a brilliant idea, but it could be lost if we do not know how to convey it properly. That is why teaching specific and practical instrumental pedagogy in conservatories and universities is imperative to prepare successful educators. The reality of today’s work market is that most of our students, even those who study to become concert pianists in the great conservatories, will teach the instrument in one way or another. Thus, we must ask: Are we preparing instrumentalists suitable for the teaching career or other professional alternatives such as collaborative pianists or entrepreneurs? Masterfully playing an instrument and winning competitions does not imply knowing how to teach, transmitting knowledge effectively, or developing a successful career beyond playing the instrument.
