About Mark W. Dewalt

Mark Dewalt is the Bank of America Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling, Leadership and Educational Studies in the College of Education and has been in higher education for more than 20 years. Dewalt earned an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from Muhlenberg College, an MED in Elementary Education from USC, and a PhD in Educational Research and Evaluation from the University of Virginia. After completing his undergraduate degree he was a teacher and coach in the public schools of Virginia and South Carolina. His research interests include one-room schools, Amish education, and Old Order culture. He has taught courses in a variety of subjects including Instructional Design, Working with Students of Poverty, Diagnostic & Corrective Reading, and Children's Literature. Most recently he has taught courses in Educational Research, Amish Culture, and Old Order Culture. Dewalt has conducted numerous lectures, presentations, and workshops on the topics of Amish Education, Amish Culture and Children of Poverty for public schools and colleges throughout the US. Recent publications by Dr. Dewalt include his first book: Amish education in the United States and Canada, and two activity books for children: The life and times of Abe Lincoln, and The life and times of Thomas Jefferson. Two recent encyclopedia articles have been published in the Encyclopedia of Educational Reform and Dissent: Amish/Mennonite Schools, and Wisconsin v. Yoder. Dr. Dewalt is active in his work with schools. He visits classroom throughout the southeast as Abe Lincoln each year as he tells about the important aspects of President Lincoln's childhood, education and life's work. Dr. Dewalt is currently on the Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer for the Country School Association of America. This professional organization sponsors a national conference each year and supports country school preservation and research through several grants and awards each year.
