Nutritional Information for Consumers – Is It Really Useful?
European Food and Feed Law Review (2021)
  • Luis González Vaqué
Abstract
In his article “Nutritional information for consumers – is it really useful? Has the time come to modify or change all the European Union legislation on this matter?”, Luis González Vaque criticises the proliferation of national and local nutrition labelling systems (Traffic Light, Nordic Keyhole, Nutri-score®, Healthy Choice, etc.). often supposedly voluntary, have been used for obvious protectionist and ethnocentric purposes to the point of endangering the survival of the Internal Market of the European Union. He further objects to the finding that front-of-pack colour-coding schemes potentially help consumers to make more health-conscious food choices. Consequently, he asks whether Art. 35 FICR needs to be repealed because the UK Traffic Light nutritional system, for which it might have been included, or any other similar system could be considered in some way incompatible with EU law.
