About Linda M. Willem

Linda M. Willem is the Betty Blades Lofton Distinguished Professor of Spanish and teaches in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures. She holds a PH.D. from UCLA in Spanish Language and Literature. Her primary area of specialization is 19th-century Spanish literature, with a focus on Benito Pérez Galdós, Emilia Pardo Bazán, and Leopoldo Alas (Clarín). She has served on the Executive Committee of the Asociación Internacional de Galdosistas (International Association of Galdós Scholars) as a vocal from 2002 through 2005, as the Secretary-Treasurer from 2007 through 2016, as the President from 2018 through 2020, and is currently an ex-oficio member.  She has been named a Galdosiana de honor and is an Académicacorrespondiente of ANLE.  Her other research area is Spanish film, with a focus on Carlos Saura, whom she has had the pleasure of interviewing twice, and on Pedro Almodóvar.  Her current research is on 21st-century adaptations (in film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel) of 19th-century Spanish novels.
