About Kathleen Morgan Drowne

Dr. Kathleen (Kate) Drowne was named Interim Vice Provost and Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business (CASB) at Missouri S&T, effective July 1, 2019. She previously served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in CASB, Dr. Drowne is also professor of English and Technical Communication and the current director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS), which provides seed grants that fund collaborations among humanists, social scientists, natural scientists and engineers. Under Dr. Drowne’s leadership, CASB began the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) program for undergraduate students to participate in research opportunities. The program creates opportunities for first-year and new transfer students to work closely with faculty research mentors on innovative research projects. A member of the Missouri S&T faculty since 2001, Drowne has served as associate dean for academic affairs in CASB since January 1, 2015.

Dr. Drowne graduated with a B.A. in English from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, in 1992. She received an M.A. in English from the University of Connecticut in 1994 and a Ph. D. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, where she specialized in 20th century American and African American literature. Her dissertation, “Spirits of Defiance: The Influence of National Prohibition on American Literature, 1920-1933,” was published as a book in 2005 by the Ohio State University Press. Before coming to Missouri S&T, Dr. Drowne was a resident fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University.

Dr. Drowne’s professional responsibilities at Missouri S&T include not only her work in the Department of English and Technical Communication, but also her administrative duties as the Director of the Writing Center.  In this capacity, she oversees two professional staff members and twenty undergraduate peer writing tutors.  She has also implemented a campus-wide summer reading program for incoming first-year students called the One Book Program.

In 2004 Greenwood Press published The 1920s: American Popular Culture Through History, written by Dr. Drowne and her co-author, Dr. Patrick Huber of the Missouri S&T Department of History and Political Science.  In 2005, the Ohio State University Press published Dr. Drowne’s Spirits of Defiance: National Prohibition and Jazz Age Literature, 1920-1933. In 2014, the University of South Carolina published Understanding Richard Russo, an analysis of Russo's contributions to contemporary American literature. Dr. Drowne has published articles in American Speech, Southern Cultures, and Callaloo and is working on a book about African American flappers.

Dr. Drowne primarily teaches American literature, including courses on the American novel, the American short story, and the literature and culture of the 1920s. She has been honored with the Missouri S&T Faculty Achievement Award in 2006, an Inspirational Faculty Award in 2009, the Missouri S&T Woman of the Year Award in 2009, a University of Missouri Research Board Grant in 2011, and the Missouri S&T faculty Service Award in both 2009 and 2012.
