Confident & Creative Mentoring: Finding Your Voice Supporting OT Professionals

Abstract
Within our profession, we possess many tools for improving our patients’ and clients’ lives, which can be translated to mentorship of other OTPs by making it an intentional aspect of our career. Building upon our role competencies allows us to explore creative ways in which we can enrich our colleagues and students. By reviewing and identifying AOTA’s five “Standards for Continuing Competency” through the lens of being a mentor, confidence can be built based on what each OTP currently possesses. Building upon these Standards which include, knowledge, critical reasoning, interpersonal skills, performance skills, and ethical reasoning, each practitioner can begin to develop their own unique approach to mentorship based on these foundational competencies. Strategic consideration of other skills and expertise can begin to further sharpen our toolkits for enhancing sharing intra-professionally to facilitate mentorship relationships in many variations.
