About Kate Walker

Kate Walker is an artist whose work moves between painting, drawing and video, where narrative devices are used to explore contemporary social issues. Originally from New Zealand, Walker started as an adjunct professor in the Department of Art at Boise State University in 2010, and joined the ranks of tenure-track faculty in 2013. Her education includes a B.A. in English Literature from Victoria University in Wellington, a Diploma in Visual Arts-Painting from Nelson Polytechnic, and a Diploma of Secondary Teaching from Christchurch College of Education, all in New Zealand. She went on to earn an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Arizona in Tucson, and a certificate in Te Tuara me Te Tinana O Te Reo Māori (Māori Language) from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, in Nelson, New Zealand. Walker's work has been widely exhibited and screened, both nationally (in New Zealand and the United States) and internationally, and she is an active exhibit curator and an invited juror and judge for art shows and awards.

Manual of Arms II 2014 (16)

Out of Bounds (7)

A collaborative project by Caroline Earley and Kate Walker, this group of work explores ideas relating to the construction of gender. Abstract forms riff on the language of x y chromosomes in the manner of a mathematics equation. In narrative imagery same sex pairings are involved in ambiguous contact activity. 3D forms becomes surfaces for 2D image making and cut canvas becomes a sculptural crafted object.

Parade (10)

National celebrations such as Macy's Day Parades and Fourth of July festivities inform this work. Pop culture icons and local handcrafted folk art such as the western cowboy are taken out of context and set into narratives with authority figures that recall Occupy Wall Street events. There is a mix up of, parade spectacle and consumption with ciphers of control and authority, questioning the roles these play in our lives.
