About Dr. Karl Campbell

Dr. Karl Campbell is an associate professor of history at Appalachian State University, where he teaches North Carolina and recent United States history. His book “Senator Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers,” about the North Carolina native who chaired the investigative committee examining the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation, won the North Carolinian Society Book of the Year Award for 2007. He has also published articles on civil rights, civil liberties and North Carolina political culture. In 2002, one of his articles won the Connor Award for the best article published in the North Carolina Historical Review.

For several years he has served as a Road Scholar with the N.C. Humanities Council, offering public presentations on his areas of expertise. He is completing work on a biography tentatively titled “Governor Luther H. Hodges: Carolina at the Crossroads.” In a forthcoming book from University of Tennessee Press called “North Carolina in World War One,” he hasa chapter titled“World War I and Two Generations of North Carolina Political Leadership.”
