Abstract
Why is mathematical modelling important? In mathematics education, some of the most important connections to be made are between the mathematical knowledge held, and the opportunities to use that knowledge. These connections go to the purpose of studying mathematics (maths can be useful), they motivate learning mathematics (it can be interesting and engaging), and mathematical modelling provides a framework and tools for application of relevant knowledge as well as for building important general capabilities. Addition to or expansion of a modelling perspective within a school mathematics program can be a way to help students realise that maths can be useful, interesting and engaging. It can motivate learning.
