About Jacque L. Kelly

Teaching Interests: I regularly teach a variety of introductory and upper-level geology courses including Introduction to the Earth lectures and laboratories, Data Management for Geologists, Isotope Geochemistry, Senior Thesis Research I, and Senior Thesis Research II.  I have also taught Introduction to Research and Teaching Internship in Geology.  I use a variety of teaching methods including traditional lectures, flipped classrooms, case studies, and student response systems.

Research Interests: Groundwater Geochemistry, Coastal Hydrology, Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing, Electrical Resistivity Tomography

My primary research interest is centered on locating and quantifying natural groundwater discharge to coastal areas. I use a variety of tools including stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, thermal infrared remote sensing, and electrical resistivity tomography to accomplish this research.  This natural discharge has the potential to deliver significant quantities of nutrients, trace metals, and contaminants to the receiving waters.  The chemical constituents in the discharging water therefore impact ecosystems both positively and negatively.  I am also interested in synergistic research that is focused on answering ecological and climatological questions related to the quantity, quality, impacts, and sustainability of natural groundwater discharge.  Through collaborative efforts, I have been working to understand how groundwater interacts with marsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica).
