About Harvey Burnett

Harvey Burnett is associate professor of psychology on the campus of Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan. He joined the Department of Behavioral Sciences faculty in January 2010. In 2015, became chair of the department.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Burnett graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1991, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. In 1994, he received a Master’s of Divinity degree from Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary.
Dr. Burnett earned his doctoral degree in 2001 from Andrews University. The title of his dissertation is: “A Study of the Relationship between Police Stress and Moral Reasoning, Coping Mechanisms, and Selected Demographic Variables.”
Dr. Burnett is a licensed psychologist and certified M.C.O.L.E.S. police officer in the State of Michigan and is the former president president of the Michigan Crisis Response Association, Inc. He also is the clinical director and member of the Berrien County Critical Incident Stress Management Board and Team and a member of the Berrien County Crisis Negotiation Team. Dr. Burnett responded to New York City shortly after the 9-11 attacks, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, and has participated in numerous critical incident stress interventions.
Some of the organizations that Dr. Burnett has had membership with include the American Psychological Association, International Conference of Police Chaplains, International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc., and the National Tactical Officers Association.
Dr. Burrnett's research interests include: trauma and stress related disorders (including PTSD), resilience, disaster behavioral health and crisis intervention response (including Critical Incident Stress Management - CISM), and substance use and abuse, along with prevention education (i.e., Drug Abuse Resistance Education - D.A.R.E.).
He is the father to Joshua, Micaela, and Rebekah Burnett.
