Dr. Harry Prapavessis was an undergraduate and graduate Master’s student at Western from 1980-1986. He received his PhD in the Department of Human Movement Science at The University of Western Australia in 1991 and spent his early Faculty years at The University of Auckland, New Zealand in the Department of Sport Science. He returned to Western in 2005 and joined the School of Kinesiology within the Faculty of Health Sciences. He also holds a cross appointment in the Department of Oncology, Division of Experimental Oncology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. He is a former Faculty Scholar and currently the Director of the Exercise and Health Psychology Lab (www.ehpl.uwo.ca).

His research program has three main foci. First he investigates the determinants of sedentary behavior and physical activity, and interventions grounded in theory that will positively change sedentary behavior and physical activity. Second, he applies exercise to nicotine models to reduce cravings and smoking behaviour. Mechanistic pathways to explain these effects are also examined. Third and finally, he explores the role that psychological factors play in the prediction, prevention, and recovery of injury. He is a strong advocate of “active transportation” and as a consequence some of his free time is devoted to planning and executing challenging yet enjoyable bike trips with family and friends.
