About George Homsy

Dr. George C. Homsy directs the Sustainable Communities master’s degree program and the Environmental Studies undergraduate degree program at Binghamton University, in Binghamton, New York, U.S.A. Homsy is an associate professor in the Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University. He researches the factors that shape sustainability policies at the municipal level, especially in small- to medium-sized cities and towns across the nation. Homsy also explores community development and sustainability at the neighborhood level through on-the-ground research and organizing in one of Binghamton’s low-income areas. Homsy links his research to practice through collaborations with professional organizations, such as the International City / County Management Association and the American Planning Association as well as with local government agencies and non-profit organizations.

Before returning to Cornell University for his PhD, George was a planning consultant helping small- and medium-sized municipalities create environmentally and economically sustainable communities. He began his investigation of local governments and sustainability as a journalist with the public radio newsmagazine Living on Earth, which he co-founded and co-produced. Subsequently, as a freelance journalist, he wrote for Planning and Tomorrow magazines as well as National Public Radio, CBS Radio's Osgood Files and The Boston Globe.
