Lee specializes in the theory of varieties of semigroups, an area in the intersection of algebra and logic. His past and pre­sent re­search top­ics in­clude equa­tional clas­si­fi­ca­tion of semi­groups, fi­nite ba­sis prob­lem, join ir­re­duci­ble semi­groups, lat­tices of va­rie­ties, Rees–Sushke­vich va­rie­ties, va­rie­ties of in­vo­lu­tion semi­groups, and va­rie­ties of mon­oids.
