About Debra Stern

Dr. Stern  is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She received manual certification from both the Ola Grimsby Institute and James Cyriax. She also completed the APTA’s Clinical Instructional Education and Credentialing Program in 2008 and is a credentialed Clinical Instructor.  She was also certified in Tai Chi for Arthritis.  Most recently she received her CEEAA from the APTA.

Teaching
Dr. Stern is the Director of Clinical Education. Her primary responsibilities are senior internship placements and orientation.  She oversees all other clinical education courses and orientation as well.  Wrap up, the final course in the curriculum, is her final responsibility with each graduating class.  In addition to primary responsibility for the clinical education and courses, she participates in Clinical SkiIls , Intro to PT and others.

Scholarly Activities and Interests
Dr. Stern’s educational research interests are varied. Geriatrics, balance and fall risk are primary, as is diabetes and its impact on balance and function.  Her most recent work focuses on CPR retention and the effects of yoga on veteran’s with PTSD. She is also engaged with studying different aspects of clinical education and serves on the Florida Consortium of Clinical Educator’s research committee. She recently published the second edition of Effective Documentation and has completed chapters in several other texts.

Areas of Practice
Dr. Stern has practiced in multiple settings over the course of her career; acute care, adult and pediatric OP, home health, and geriatrics. Her primary focus has been geriatric rehabilitation.

Professional Activity Summary
Dr. Stern has been an APTA member since completing her physical therapy education, and is a current member of the, Geriatric, Policy and Administration and Education sections.  She is active in the Florida Chapter, where she serves as an Assembly Representative for the Southeast District as chair of the Continuing Education Committee.   She was chair of the original task force on continuing education for the FPTA and was an active task force member on the committee that established the assembly of representatives for the FPTA.
