About Charles Smutny

Dr. Charles J. Smutny III is currently an Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

He graduated from CW. Post Long Island University, New York (NY) 1984 with a Baccalaureate of Science and Education magna cum laude. He graduated NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine with honors 1994 completing the 5-year undergraduate fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

Internship was completed in Massapequa General Hospital New York 1995. He completed Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine residency at St. Barnabas (Bronx, NY) in 1997. He was board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine in 1998 and in 2008. He completed his 2-year Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship with the American Academy Osteopathy in 2005. He carries a Certificate of Proficiency in Osteopathy in the Cranial Field and holds licensure in Acupuncture through the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA 2001.

Dr. Smutny served as Director of Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Director of Information Technology at South Shore Neurologic Associates from 2000 to 2003, Director of the Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine residency program at North Shore University Hospital at Plainview, NY from 2003 – 2006, and served as an NCCAM advisory committee member representing North Shore University Hospital system 2003-2006. He has chaired and co-chaired the Louisa Burns Osteopathic Research Committee for the American Academy Osteopathy from 1999-2016; served on the Board of Directors of the Cranial Academy in 2006; several American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine; and American Academy Osteopathy national committees on research, finance and education over 18 years. Additionally, he was a member of the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Research from 2005-2009.

Dr. Smutny achieved the rank of assistant professor teaching Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1994 through 2000. He served as a professor of anatomy and physiology at SUNY Suffolk, on Long Island in NY from 2010-2015. He is published in the JAOA, AAO Journal, and is a contributing author in several Osteopathic textbooks. Dr. Smutny continues to research, advocate and teach osteopathic concepts at the national and international levels.
