About Charisse Kwan

Dr. Charisse Kwan is a pediatric emergency care specialist at the Children's Hospital (LHSC) whose research mainly involved point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in the context of medical education.

Dr. Kwan is also involved in simulation-based teaching. Future research interests include bioinformatics and artificial intelligence.


Dr. Kwan earned her B.Sc with distinction at the University of Western Ontario and received her medical degree at McMaster University.  She completed her paediatric residency and was chief resident at Queen’s University. Following the completion of a paediatric emergency medicine fellowship and then a paediatric point of care ultrasound fellowship, she joined the faculty in the Paediatric Emergency Department at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. She has an interest in point of care ultrasound in medical education and is also involved in clinical and medical education research.

Research Interests
Dr. Kwan's research focuses on the use of emergency ultrasound technology in Paediatric Emergency medicine.  Areas of emphasis include: novel clinical application design and use, learning curves, education and simulation.


Charisse Kwan is Director of the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Point of Care Ultrasound Program and Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto and works as a PEM physician at the The Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Kwan has developed and taught many national and international PEM POCUS workshops integrating low-fidelity simulation into ultrasound learning. She is also interested in how people of all levels learn POCUS and is researching learning curves, deliberate practice and assessment scales. The rest of her time and interests are now taken up by her newborn son, yet she will still find the time to discuss anything PEM POCUS!
