About Benjamin Pauli

The main interest that guides Dr. Pauli’s research is the way in which political ideologies inspire people to
dissent from prevailing patterns of political life and unite with others to seek political change. He is interested
in social movements in particular as contexts in which ideas and action come together. Dr. Pauli’s dissertation
research further refined his scholarly interests into a specialization in the history and theory of anarchism.
Since coming to Flint, Dr. Pauli has also developed new research interests stemming from his involvement in
the response to the Flint water crisis, including environmental contamination, citizen science, infrastructure,
and urban politics in post-industrial contexts. Dr. Pauli is currently completing a book under contract with MIT
University Press entitled Flint Fights Back: Environmental Justice and Democracy in the Flint Water Crisis.

Dr. Pauli believes the most important tasks of education are to stimulate critical thinking and develop
students' sense of agency. These objectives are best accomplished, in his view, in classroom environments
that foster reflection on the practice of education itself, that eschew traditional hierarchies between teacher
and student, and that encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. He thinks of education
as a permanent process that extends beyond the walls of the classroom into every area of our lives. While an
in-class lecture can open minds and expand horizons, our experiences in the "real world" can also force us to
confront new questions and grapple with unanticipated problems in ways that foster personal growth. Dr.
Pauli strives to bridge these two contexts as much as possible, designing course content that invites students
to rethink their sense of self, their values, and their place in society in ways that they can take with them into
their home lives, their working lives, and their social lives. He also strives to get students involved in "service
learning," enabling them to apply insights developed in the classroom to real-life work in the community, and
in the process gain new perspective on the value-- and the limitations-- of their academic training.
