Associate Professor of Sociology
My name is Aaron Hoy, Ph.D., and I am an associate professor of sociology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where my teaching and research focus on families, sexualities, sex and gender, and qualitative methods. I have particular interests in marriage and divorce and how sexual minorities think about and experience them both. For example, my dissertation research was based on in-depth interviews with currently married and recently divorced gay men and lesbians to explore their transitions in and out of marital unions following the legalization of same-sex marriage across the US. More recently, I have collected online survey data from a non-random sample of sexual minority young adults (18-35) on their marital attitudes and aspirations. I am also the editor of The Social Science of Same-Sex Marriage: LGBT People and Their Relationships in the Era of Marriage Equality (Routledge, 2022).
As a dedicated scholar-teacher, I also create opportunities to conduct research and write with students. To date, I have published multiple journal articles with both undergraduate and graduate students at MSU, Mankato, including those listed below.
Originally from Southeastern Ohio, I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in sociology from Ohio University and then completed my MA and PhD, both in sociology, at Syracuse University.
