About Jayant Lohakare

Dr. Jayant Lohakare is working as a Research Professor and Director of Poultry Center at Prairie View A&M University in Cooperative Agricultural Research Center. In this position, he conducts research on poultry and oversees the operations at the poultry center. He also teaches Poultry Science and Dairy Science courses to UG students. He has a bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry; BVSc & AH), Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in animal nutrition and more than 20 combined years of research, teaching, laboratory, and field experience. Dr. Lohakare has earned his doctorate degree from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izzatnagar, India which is a highly prestigious top-class premiere research institute in India. After completing his doctoral studies, he has worked as a technical services manager for a poultry feed additive and premixes marketing company before starting his research career as a post-doc in South Korea. Dr. Lohakare was selected as an Alexander von Humboldt Research fellow in Germany which is a prestigious award and worked at University of Bonn, Germany from 2006- Aug 2008. Prior to this position at PVAMU, Dr. Lohakare served as a tenured Associate Professor of Animal Science. In the recent past he has worked as a researcher with diverse species of food animals applying nutrition, animal biotechnology and cell culture techniques in research. He has published 80 research articles in high-impact peer-reviewed journals as author or co-author in the field of animal nutrition including poultry and contributed book chapters. He currently serves on the editorial board of Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, BMC Veterinary Research – Springer Nature Group, and several other journals. His area of expertise in poultry nutrition involves looking for alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters that are natural and environmentally friendly. Most of his research is focused on feed additives and vitamin levels in poultry diets. He has also worked on nutrient and gene interactions and how nutrigenomics plays important role in production performance of animals.
