About Steven Corns

Dr. Steven Corns is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is also an investigator in the Environmental Research Center for Emerging Contaminants and the Energy Research and Development Center here at Missouri S&T. Dr. Corns serves as Vice Chair on the Bioinformatics and Bioengineering Technical Committee for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, represent the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society as chair for the Greater St. Louis Area, and is the lead investigator for the INCOSE MBSE Initiative Biomedical Challenge Team.

Dr. Corns' research interests include Computational Intelligence and Model Based Systems Engineering, with application areas in energy systems and bioinformatics/computational biology. His research focus in computational intelligence involves fundamental research on the nature of these methods and how they can be used for data analysis, system optimization, and system integration. This includes researching the use of genetic algorithms to speed up calculation times for mathematical simulations and the design of resilient systems. He has recently started investigating how techniques used in this area can be applied to biological systems. Ongoing work includes the investigation into the effects of using graph theory to control the local mating rules for a searching algorithm. Model Based Systems Engineering is a research area that focuses on shifting the focus of systems engineering from a document centric system to a model centric system.

Dr. Corns' teaching interests are also focused on the use of computational resources to enable complexity management for the design of complex systems. He offers the core of the Model Based Systems Engineering specialty track as well as the introductory Systems Engineering course for department core coursework.
