About Ronald F Levant

Dr. Ronald Levant has been one of the leading pioneers of the new field of the psychology of men. He played the key role in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in envisioning and developing this new field, serving as co-founder, co-chair, and the first President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity (APA Division 51). He co-edited A New Psychology of Men (Basic Books, 1995), which has been cited as “the most salient publication” in the new psychology of men (Cochrane, 2010, p. 45). It has served as the standard graduate text and professional reference book for the past 20 years. Since its publication, the field has experienced explosive growth. The original pioneers of this field have spawned several generations of scholars and practitioners, many of whom hold tenured and tenure track positions at doctoral programs all across the country and are now training the next generation of practitioners and academics. Furthermore, the APA journal, Psychology of Men & Masculinity is now in its 15th year of publication, and has a 2013 Impact Factor of 1.823, and Levant has served as Editor for half of that time. Finally he has developed theory and conducted research on fathering, gender role strain, masculinity ideology in multicultural perspective, and normative male alexithymia.
