Willa Cather in and out of Zane Grey’s West
Cather Studies (2011)
  • John Swift, Occidental College
Abstract

This essay juxtaposes the careers and work of Willa Cather and Zane Grey, with particular emphasis on their use of emergent cultural myths of the American Southwest. It uses a mainly psychoanalytic vocabulary to identify a problem of desire that both writers associated with the Southwest, and suggests that they responded to that problem in quite different formal ways.
