About John Swift

John Swift is Professor of English and Comparative Literary Studies and Associate Dean of the College for Curriculum and Student Issues. In his administrative position he directs the Core Program in the Liberal Arts, serves as dean for the social sciences, and convenes a number of committees and task forces.
Swift’s teaching and research interests lie in late 19th and early 20th century British and American literature. Much of his scholarly work focuses on the American novelist Willa Cather; he has also written recently on (among other things) issues of American literary regionalism and race. He has a longstanding professional interest in undergraduate research as pedagogy in the humanities; he was one of the founders of the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research and currently is an Arts and Humanities Councilor for the national Council on Undergraduate Research.
