Areas of interest: microbial diversity and cultivation, bacterial cell-to- cell communication, biology of the phototrophic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris,

I am broadly interested in the study of the metabolisms and physiologies of environmental bacteria, and in the culturing of novel bacteria from the environment to gain insight into the vast microbial diversity that exists on our planet. We live in a microbial world where microorganisms thrive in nearly all habitats imaginable on earth and make a living from even the strangest favorable chemical reactions. Microbes are expert biochemists: they carry out a myriad of chemical transformations, and many of these processes are useful as solutions for environmental challenges from bioenergy to waste bioremediation.
