Abstract
The aim of the paper is to estimate the value of the improvement of air quality in Beijing through the residents' willingness to pay (WTP) by using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The result indicated that the residents' mean WTP for a 50% reduction of the current concentration of pollutiants in the air was 143yuan per household and per year, and the total WTP of the residents in the research area was 336 million per year. The socio economic variables that had significant influence on WTP were income of household, education level, sum of household's population and age. Some problems on the application of CVM in China were discussed at the end of the paper.
