Abstract
The effect of the following 17 fungicides used in viticulture on the hyphal growth of the Esca-pathogens Fomitiporia mediterranea and Phaeomoniella chlamydospora and the spore germination of P. chlamydospora was tested in vitro: Arius, Cantus, Elido, Flint, Folpan 80 WDG, Forum 50 WP, Frupica, Kocide 2000, Prosper 300 CS, Rovral, Stroby WG, M 70, Talendo EC, Teldor, Tiovit Jet, Topas 10 EC and Zoxium 240 SC. The most effective fungicides using both field doses (FD) and ten-fold diluted doses were M 70 (active ingredient: mancozeb), Prosper (spiroxamine) and Topas 10 EC (penconazole). Tiovit (sulphur) strongly inhibited the germination of the conidia. Elicio (containing the two anti-fungal ingredients aluminium fosetyl and fenamidone) was less effective against the pathogens in vitro. Aluminium fosetyl, however, had shown promising results in vivo in other experiments. Rovral (iprodione) showed relatively good inhibition of both Esca-pathogens. Kocide 2000 (copper hydroxide) inhibited mainly F. mediterranea, but showed little effect on P. chlamydospora. Folpan (folpet) was more effective against the latter fungus. Fungicides containing derivates of strobilurin (Flint: trifloxystrobin; Stroby: kresoxim-methyl) were not very effective. Zoxium 240 SC (zoxamide) showed some inhibition of F. mediterranea, but not of P. chlamydospora. Cantus (boscalid), Teldor (fenhexamid), Frupica (mepanipyrim), Arms (quinoxyfen), Talendo EC (proquinazid) and Forum WP 50 (dimethomorph) showed very little effect on the fungal growth if any at all.
