Managing technology at a time of contracting budget and expanding patron expectations
Chinese American Librarians Association Southern California Chapter Annual Conference (2011)

Abstract

Within today’s complex information ecosystem and Web 2.0 promises, library patrons are faced with myriad options and libraries are just one of many viable information providers. Lest we forget, patrons today are considerably more tech savvy, with demands for immediate gratification, robust system performance, and a mentality of always-on service availability. At the same time, however, libraries are faced with dwindling budgets and evolving fiscal uncertainty, at the human service level, the collection level, the technological level, and quite often the synergistic interaction of all.

During my presentation, I shall address managing IT operations in academic libraries under current environment conditions and constraints, with particular emphasis upon day-to-day services and concerns, top technology trends, opportunities and challenges, and ultimately, possible wining strategies.
