Abstract
What makes the practice of medicine meaningful to physicians? Surprisingly, there has been little formal discussion of this important question, despite growing interest in medical humanism and in the meanings that illnesses hold for patients. With all the turmoil in medicine today--physician dissatisfaction, patient dissatisfaction, diminishing interest on the part of students it might be useful to explore what fulfills practitioners and reaffirms their commitment to their profession.
