Maine’s patented fishing lures – a story of Yankee inventiveness.

Abstract
Six pieces of terminal fishing tackle invented in Maine received U.S. patents prior to 1928. These fishing lures were the: (1) Dunlap's Spring Hook, patented during 1875 in Eustis (where made); (2) Stanley's Aluminum Smelt, 1895 and 1896 (Dixfield); (3) 'Old Glory' Spring Hook, 1897 and 1899 (Biddeford); (4) Murray's Aluminum Minnow, 1910 (Auburn); (5) Kismet Casting Hook, 1921 (Freeport); and the Lucerne Lure, 1927 (Bangor). A photograph of each lure is shown.
