Dubious dealings – the surprising story of the 1846 sockdologer.
The National Fishing Lure Collectors Club Magazine (2015)
Abstract
The earliest piece of terminal fishing tackle made in the U.S.A. was a spring hook (with a knock-out punch = sockdologer) stamped 1846. There was been a considerable uncertainty and controversy surrounding who invented, made, distributed, and sold this early fishing lure. This article, relying heavily on a period police report published at the time in New York City newspaper, solved the mystery.
