Abstract
Paul Douglas lived a full life. He provided significant teaching and research contributions to the University of Chicago’s Economics Department, and leadership for the field of economics. Douglas was also notable for his ventures outside the classroom, including enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 52, and for building active policy development on top of academic foundations, including service as a legislator in the Chicago City Council followed by three terms in the United States Senate. His career provides valuable lessons for anyone who cares about ethics in government and sustainable public finance.
