About Wardah Mustahsan

Wardah Mustahsan, Ph.D., is an accomplished plant geneticist and agronomist with a profound commitment to advancing agricultural sustainability and food security through innovative research in crop genetics and breeding. Holding a Ph.D. in Agronomy from Kansas State University, Dr. Mustahsan's academic journey is marked by a strong focus on plant genetics, particularly concerning the enhancement of disease resistance and yield-related traits in wheat and rice. Dr. Mustahsan's doctoral dissertation, titled "Characterization of Stripe Rust Resistance and Yield-Related Traits in an 'Overley' x 'Overland' Population," highlights an understanding to the genetic interplay between yield traits and disease resistance in hard red winter wheat. Through her research she identified key quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with stripe rust resistance, contributing valuable insights to the field of plant pathology and genetics. Prior to earning their Ph.D., Dr. Mustahsan completed a Master of Science in Plant Breeding at Texas A&M University. Her thesis focused on "Whole Genome Transcriptome Profiling for Heat Tolerance and Genome-Wide Association for Exotic Traits in Rice," positioning them at the forefront of genomic research in crop improvement where the investigation led to an understand of the genetic basis of heat tolerance in rice, aimed at enhancing productivity under changing climate conditions.

In her current role as a Research Specialist II at Prairie View University, Dr. Mustahsan is contributing to research on wheat and sorghum mutant lines, delving into the genetic effects of physiological and phenotypic traits under contrasting environmental conditions and treatments (far-red and control treatment) using RNA-Seq analysis. Throughout her career, Dr. Mustahsan has accumulated extensive experience in the field, conducting pivotal research that has contributed to a better understanding of yield components and resistance mechanisms in key cereal crops. Her work has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications, as well as ongoing projects that continue to explore the genetic architecture of yield traits and disease resistance. With a passionate drive for research excellence, Dr. Mustahsan continues to make significant strides in enhancing crop resilience and productivity, fostering a sustainable agricultural future.
