Department Chair and Associate Professor
Dr. Victoria M. Rizzo is the chair of and an associate professor in the Binghamton University Department of Social Work. She received her MSW and her PhD from the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY).
Dr. Rizzo has used her extensive social work practice in health care experience to develop and implement health and social services research in the areas of chronic illness and aging. She has received funding from various foundations and agencies -- including the John A. Hartford Foundation, the Arthritis Foundation (New York Chapter), the UJA-Federation of New York, the Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA) Board of Trustees and the Garfield Foundation of Kaiser Permanente Health Care Systems -- to examine the impact of social work interventions on older adults coping with chronic illnesses, elder abuse and the demands of informal caregiving. From 2007 to 2014, Dr. Rizzo partnered with JASA, the largest social service agency for elders in New York City, to conduct research focused on the provision of professional social work services to older adults participating in JASA-sponsored programs. As a result of this work, Dr. Rizzo was an invited participant for the Civil Legal Aid Research Workshop co-sponsored by the United States Department of Justice National Institute of Justice, the Access to Justice Initiative and the National Science Foundation in May 2015.
Currently, with funding from the Commonwealth Fund, Dr. Rizzo is collaborating with Dr. Suk-Young Kang and with colleagues from the Rush University Medical Center Health and Aging Center and the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater to examine the impact of the Ambulatory Integration of the Medical and Social (AIMS) intervention on health care utilization and outcomes, as well as on patient satisfaction with health care service delivery.
In a 2012 issue of the Journal of Social Work Education, Dr. Rizzo was identified as a top-rated social work journal co-author associated with a connected network of often-cited social work scholars.
